THE PROJECT
Academy Alerts is a designed and prototyped app revolving around the topic of school safety. The app is primarily formatted as a visual emergency response notification system that provides quick digestible information to students, faculty, and emergency services in a matter of seconds.
THE GOAL
The initial goal of this project was to design an app that encompassed school campus safety. The final app design required an understandable and applicable user interface design and user experience.

COMPONENTS
User experience understanding and development, user interface design, product prototyping
THE PROCESS

Pitching the Idea

To tackle the project goal, or team began by brainstorming ideas regarding how school safety could be improved. We discovered that we both had experiences regarding school emergencies with vague instructions, and this issue began to sculpt our idea.

Getting into Perspective

To best understand design priority, we always incorporated the question “why?” into our design process. Every decision had to be supported with an applicable reason. Therefore, our design used an understandable, discrete, and user-friendly interface.
Incremental Feedback
Throughout the design process, our team gained critique from professors that prompted us to think critically about our user interface. Incremental feedback from outside sources allowed the team to review our work from an unbiased perspective.

Prototyping
After designing our interface, we built simple prototypes to test the viability of said interface. Bringing the project into a testable state allowed the team to identify obstacles that were previously overlooked.

Presentation

To package Academy Alerts as a project deliverable, our team created a Behance presentation page. The page summarizes the core components of the app concept, how it works, and the purpose that it serves within the greater scope of the school safety environment.

THE TAKEAWAYS

Adapting to the Consumer

Due to the nature of emergency situations, we often prioritized function over aesthetics, and therefore we built the overall design for ease of access and safety first.

Weight in Every Decision

As our team developed our app, we quickly realized that every decision we made had a direct impact on the purpose and usability of said app. Therefore, we had to take careful consideration of our creative work.

Design-Driven Project

By participating in a project that featured a more in-depth look at design, I was able to gain a better understanding of the design process.
